New Article: The Assembly Line Model – A High-Level Introduction
Until now, the Assembly Line Model was introduced within individual articles – as part of Value Stream Identification, Optimization, or Visualization – but there was no single article that explained what the model actually is, how it looks, and what it can be used for. This new article closes that gap. It describes the key elements of the Assembly Line – from the product and its hand-off back through integration, components, and backlogs to demand – and explains why each element exists. Beyond the basic structure, the article shows how the same model serves multiple complementary purposes: making value stream structure visible, revealing feedback cycles, enabling „organize around value“ discussions, and providing the scaffolding for systematic measurement. A final section explores how the Assembly Line’s self-similar, recursive structure allows it to scale from a single team’s workflow to enterprise-wide value stream landscapes. I wrote this article because I kept encountering the same situation: people had heard about the Assembly Line, had seen it used in specific contexts, but were missing the foundational overview that connects the pieces. I hope it serves as a useful starting point – whether you are new to Value Stream Thinking or looking for a concise reference to share with others.
